During the holidays, I went to a holiday tea with friends and I really wanted to wear something festive. I had grand plans to make Simplicity S9286 out of some lovely Hanukkah fabric from Robert Kaufman. However, time got the best of me (as it tends to do during the holidays) and the next thing I knew, the holiday tea was the next day. So I was going to be making my skirt the morning of the event.
Using the skirt from that pattern — mostly because it was already cut out and on my table, I whipped up a circle skirt instead and paired it with a vintage sweater that I had from my grandmother. I had the silver elastic which matched perfectly in my stash and had been waiting for just the right circle skirt to use it with. I also picked up some super sparkly retro-ish shoes from Amazon that surprisingly were the right size and were mostly comfortable (I did get 2 tiny blisters, but I didn’t notice them until later that night). And, of course, a petticoat underneath.
I didn’t do a great job of taking photos while I was making it because I’ve been working on getting better at making short form videos like Shorts or Reels. I’ve embedded the one I made below, and I was more focused on that (if you look closely you can see my hair in curlers for a brief second to give you an idea of how I was multi-tasking). Usually I try to get photos as well, but, eh, still working on it. At least with Shorts its easier to embed than with Instagram Reels so that’s a win!
I did actually do the fitting for the bodice of that dress, but it still needs a little tweaking to fit properly. Might be easier to just draft it myself than try to rework the back and darts. We’ll see. It’s in the timeout pile for now while I focus on some of my other projects that are more interesting and/or higher priority (where priority is admittedly fairly arbitrary).
Hopefully getting some more photos in the new year, but I’ve got plenty to post until then!
