Betz White Reversible Bucket Hat, a Sprout project

Here’s another super old project that I’m just getting around to posting. These photos are from . . . 2017? Yeah, super old. Well, this will be a quick post. And nevermind what I’m wearing in the photos. I’m gardening. I’m not going to be wearing my finest duds when I’m playing in the dirt.…

Grainline Archer Button Up from Lauren Taylor Workshop

Clothing, SewingBy PigletJanuary 8, 20211 Comment

Yeah, so this one is long overdue for posting. This is the Grainline Archer Button Up Shirt which I made at a workshop with Lauren Taylor at Hello Stitch Studio which is the cutest and most welcoming studio you’ve ever been to. If I lived near them, they’d be like a second home. Also, you can see…

This was the final project for the other class I took at Cañada College Fashion Department, Designer Techniques in Sewing. This was such a fun class. We basically spent the semester learning cool and fun techniques you could do to a garment to move from the basic pattern to something that is more “you.” You’ll…

God Jul Tree Skirt

SewingBy PigletDecember 25, 2020Leave a comment

Due to the pandemic, we’re not celebrating Christmas with family this year, but I wanted to make it festive for my husband, especially since I usually do so much for Hanukkah. So I got a tiny tree and spent some time making a tree skirt to liven it up a bit. I did the text…

Tinkerbell Wings

Costumes & Cosplay, Crafts, DogBy PigletOctober 24, 2020Leave a comment

This post is about how I made the Tinkerbell wings for the dog costume. I wanted to try making wings for myself, but figured dog wings were a good place to start. These were inspired by a pair of wings from Fancy Fairy Wings & Things. Her wings are gorgeous and if you want wings, I…

Tinkerbell and Peter Pan Dog Costumes

Costumes & Cosplay, Dog, SewingBy PigletOctober 21, 2020Leave a comment

This is a hard post for me to write which is why it’s taken so long given these costumes were made a while ago. Last year my little Tinkerbell traded her fairy wings for angel wings. I miss her every day and looking at these photos makes me both happy and sad, but I’d rather…

Costumes & Cosplay, SewingBy PigletOctober 14, 20202 Comments

So this is a post that is WAY overdue. This is my first running costume from my first Disney Princess Half-Marathon. Also my first half-marathon. Yeah, let’s face it, the only way you were going to get me to run 13.1 miles was with the lure of wearing a costume and the promise that tons…

Draped Back Collar Sleeveless Shirt

Clothing, SewingBy PigletOctober 8, 20201 Comment

I’m taking Designer Techniques in Sewing at Cañada College virtually this fall. The class is amazing. I’m learning tons of new techniques to use to make an article of clothing “mine” — exactly the reason why I love sewing my own clothes. Technically we only have to do a couple of samples each week, but…

Grace Circle Strawberry Quilt Finish

Quilting, SewingBy PigletOctober 5, 20201 Comment

It’s been a bit since I posted but that’s because time is weird in a pandemic. Here’s another Grace Circle charity quilt finish. For this one, I asked the circle members to make me a strawberry block using this tutorial. They came out so super cute! I put them in a brick pattern. The quilting…

Just finished up the #freemotionquilting workshop Just finished up the #freemotionquilting workshop taught by @afewscraps for #quiltcontogether These were some great exercises and I really appreciated hey advice sprinkled throughout. While I still have a ways to go on my free motion work, I'm actually pretty happy with how my samples turned out and impressed with how much more comfortable I was by the end of the exercises. Plus, I didn't even use my stitch regulator. I like the stitch regulator and I will use it for quilts but I wanted to work on my fundamentals with this class and let the stitch regulator be more of a bonus than a crutch.

This was my #flatlay for the #disneyprincesshalfma This was my #flatlay for the #disneyprincesshalfmarathon that I did today. Didn't break any records but I finished! As is tradition, @tibbs_girl and I did it together, but 2500 miles apart using the magic of technology. Realized that I definitely need to get my body acclimated to higher mileage gradually instead of just throwing 13.1 miles at it 😝 Without longer races to keep me in check, I haven't been as good about my long runs. 🤞 next year we'll be back in the park.
Finished my sample from the Gemology and Transpare Finished my sample from the Gemology and Transparency workshop by @3rdstoryworkshop and I absolutely love the result. I actually pre-ordered her book when it first came out but haven't had time to do more than ogle the designs before this. The workshop made it quite manageable and had so many helpful paper piecing tips!

This is the Chocolate Pecan Pie Cake recipe from mycakeschool which combined two of my favorite desserts, fudgy chocolate cake and pecan pie. And then I had to add some macarons of course. 🎂 It's sooo good 🤤 (yeah, I made a half recipe but there was still no way we could finish it all).

Quilt of frustration. Or at least annoyance. This Quilt of frustration. Or at least annoyance. This was supposed to be a light easy quilt, something I could toodle away at between other projects. It's made using some kona jelly rolls.

Well, first, it turns out the jelly rolls shed a ton. So every time I work on it, there are black, blue, purple fuzz everywhere. It's like glitter but not sparkly.

Then, on account of the fuzz, it leaves a tinge of black on the bobbin case so I have to deep clean every time after I work on it because otherwise, light colors of thread look grey.

Finally, I finished one jelly roll worth of squares which gave me 8 x 12 squares (48" x 72"). I had another jelly roll of the colors so I ordered another black one and decided to add on 4 to each row so I could have a nice square 72" x 72" quilt. Finished the extras and was attaching them to the existing rows and one row doesn't match colorwise 😫 That third from the bottom in the first photo. Swipe to the second photo to see what I mean. It's subtle. Hard to see in the photos but you can tell in real life. The worst part? Neither of them match anything in my kona color card 🥺

So now I must decide:
Option 1) Leave the mismatched row in there.
Option 2) Keep the mismatched row but alternate squares so it's less obvious (maybe).
Option 3) Remove the offending row (see picture 3) and have a short wide quilt (72" x 66").
Option 4) Remove the extras from all of the other rows and go back to 8x12 squares.
Option 5) Put it away for another year until I come back to it and really don't care 😝

Quilty friends, what would you do?

I did actually manage to eke out one more finish i I did actually manage to eke out one more finish in 2020. I finished my Summer top by @ankestrick that I started it with @onepetal from @uncommonthreadsyarn as a knit along back in the summer! I didn't have much left after the knit along, but I only had enough time to finish it recently and I told myself I couldn't start something new until I finished. Looks like that gave me the push I needed 🙂 All the ends are woven in, but it still needs to be blocked.

The yarn is Sami by @amanoyarns which is the yummiest, softest organic cotton. I loved working with it so much that I had to pick up more from @uncommonthreadsyarn during their black friday sale to hopefully make a striped sweater one of these days.

And another quilt top done. This one was from when And another quilt top done. This one was from when @siliconvalleymqg hosted @annamariahorner for a color theory workshop. After a fun exercise, we all ended up with a different set of fat quarters than we had originally brought. This is the quilt I came up with from the ones I ended up with. Totally different than anything I would ever pick myself (I don't usually lean towards red) which is why the workshop was fun! It's been sitting in a half finished state for a while now so good to have it done and off my shelf (though now it's hanging in the waiting to be quilted area).

Another quilt done. Well the top at least. I'll ne Another quilt done. Well the top at least. I'll need more fabric for the back (I've only got enough for half since this turned out bigger than I expected). This was our guild's mystery block of the month and it was a really good exercise for me as it pushed me way out of my comfort zone. This is not my usual way of doing quilts and with a modern BOM there was so much freedom it was daunting. I would have preferred to do a design that that had more open areas, but it was already big as is at 89" x 54" that I didn't want to go any larger. So this was the best I came up up with after a fair bit of sliding things around on the floor.

And look what I FINALLY finished tonight. Just man And look what I FINALLY finished tonight. Just managing to squeeze it in to 2020.

All it actually needed was the hem. But here's a secret: I'm actually terribly afraid of evening out hems after letting the bias hang out. I worry I'll make it worse or mess it up. And when you've put so much work into something and it's almost there, then you don't want to mess it up even more. (It's kinda like when you finally make it pass all the mini-bosses after several days of playing and you're finally at the big boss and you know if you die then you'll have to go back and beat all the mini-bosses all. over. again.) But I took the advice of a favorite motivational quote -- what would you do if you were not afraid? -- and just did it. And it wasn't that bad!

I'll get pictures in it in a couple days because guess who has a NYE dress now? ☺️
