🎀 HUFS 2023 Judges' Choice Winner
This weekend I had a great time celebrating Romanc This weekend I had a great time celebrating Romance Bookstore Day at @anovelaffairbookcafe ! On Saturday I stopped by their Book Girl Summer Analog Party. During the day, they had an array of activities including t-shirt printing with @weprintonthings (I got a tank top), delicious matcha from Coffee Lovers, and author signings. I got signed books from both @rrobinsonwrites and @staceyleeauthor . I love the fact that I get a chance to actually chat with the authors when I get books signed at the store. Both were so nice and I'm excited to read their novels! In the evening, they had a DJ spinning '90s tunes (yes!) and it was BYO crafting. Naturally, I decided to start something new that night 🙃 There were actually a lot of other activities like tarot and a charm bar, but I got busy chatting and meeting new book friends. And on Sunday I went to the See You at the Sunset event for the author @susanleewrites in conversation with @christinalauren which was a fun time. Of course had to get books signed by both of them. And meet several more lovely book peeps. Thank you @anovelaffairbookcafe for building such a great community!
One of the few signings that I did make was with @ One of the few signings that I did make was with @itsmonamay Mona May for her Clueless fashion book at the @insighteditions booth. Clueless was (and is) such a seminal movie for me when it came out, both culturally and fashion wise. It defined the fashion for that era. I have always been into sewing and costumes, but I have no doubt that movie started me thinking more about fashion. (Not to mention all the other movies she’s done like Romy & Michele, Enchanted, etc.) Mona was wonderful to chat with. She was engaging and we really connected while she signed my book. Of course we talked about fashion, but we also talked about life and motivations 💖 If there weren’t people waiting behind me, I would have loved to talk to her even longer! Photo dump from days 1 and 2 (Thursday and Friday) Photo dump from days 1 and 2 (Thursday and Friday) of San Diego Comic Con @comic_con this year. Visited the Prancing Pony. Checked out some very cool Marvel costumes. Saw the Lorax! On Friday, I wore my Zodiac Academy Geraldine Grus cosplay. Stopped by the @wetaworkshop booth where I saw the super pretty crown and caught @waxsealedcostumes in her amazing Eärien look. Picked up the graphic novel Niobe at @strangercomics and got it signed by the author @sebastian.a.jones . And I have no idea what that diorama was but it was cool. Overall, good times 💫 Re: my cosplay, I had planned to make it for last year, but didn't finish it in time so it was nice to finally wear it. I love it and it's very con-comfy, but TBH, SDCC probably isn't the right place to wear it as most folks there aren't as familiar with the gift that is the Zodiac Academy series (they're missing out). Today is the launch of the Women’s Pro Baseball Le Today is the launch of the Women’s Pro Baseball League, so it seems like a fitting day to post my latest cosplay that I wore to SDCC – DC Bombshell Batwoman! ⚾️ But this isn’t actually the first women’s baseball league – the first baseball league for women was back in World War II (we all saw A League of Their Own, right?), which is actually when the DC Bombshell comics take place! While I was originally going to draft this myself, I ran out of time and decided to use @simplicity_creative_group Simplicity 8432 since the big 4 patterns typically fit me well. I only made a few modifications: • I used a real softball belt rather than sewing my own, both for time and the look. • I added horsehair to the hem of the skirt so it would be more flowy like the comics. • I photographed the pattern and created a vector for the bats and back graphics so I could cut them out with my @silhouette.inc vinyl cutter rather than applique (because, time 😅). • I wore sneakers rather than cleats because there was no way I was walking around a con in cleats 😛 • Oh, and you may notice the non-comic-accurate tape around the handle of the bat. That’s because I had to saw the bat into pieces to get it to fit in my suitcase, then make it look whole again when I got to @comic_con! 🙃 Thank you to my Catwoman @jybelly for doing my eye mask makeup, and to Wonder Woman @lauren_bellydancer for holding my bat every time I had to pull off my gloves to use my phone! 💖 Did anyone else follow the DC Bombshells series? Starting off my @comic_con recap with the event cl Starting off my @comic_con recap with the event closest to my heart: the Her Universe Fashion Show. 💖 Back in 2017, I barely snagged a standby seat at my first SDCC, not knowing how the lines worked.🙃 Fast forward to this year, and I was invited back to participate in the lobby display as a previous winner! This year was presented by Warner Brothers/Discovery Global Consumer Products celebrating @dcofficial and the team put together a great show and amazing lobby display where attendees could immerse themselves in all things DC. The HU team reached out to past winners Vivien @freshfrippery (2021 Audience Winner), Candice @candicedunlapmiller (2024 Audience Winner) and me (2023 Judges Winner) to bring some streetwear fashion to the lobby display by building upon a current garment for a complete look. I was excited to work with a Lobo jersey from @boxlunchgifts ; Vivien used the @heruniverse Superman jacket; and Candice knitted up a storm for the @hottopic Clayface look. It was a great experience! I’ll post more about the look I designed separately. For the show, @ashleyeckstein and @iammjscott led the audience through an adventure worthy of any superhero with singing, dancing, and performance. Their outfits designed by @andrewmaclaine and @pixel_stitcher were outstanding, including a dress and cape that were painted right in front of the audience and looks incorporating custom metal pieces by @stepheng3277. But the designers were the stars of the show! Every look that walked down the runway was fabulous and really brought creativity, style, and fandom to the stage. Huge congrats to @electricseafoam as the Judges Winner, @seanquinncosplay as the Audience Winner, and @maggiewalker4 as Fan Spotlight Winner! "Super" excited to share this @heruniverse DC Comi "Super" excited to share this @heruniverse DC Comics Supergirl Badges Cardigan! So many cute details went into it that it's hard for me to decide on my favorite. The embroidery is perfect with patches down the left arm and the Supergirl text on the right, and of course the classic S on the back, but my favorite part might be the V shape at the cuff as a nod to Kara's uniform. It was designed by 2025 Her Universe Fashion Show Judges Winner Lynleigh Sato and it's obvious how much thought went into this. It's soft, comfortable, and I love the fit which I've been wearing both open and closed. Last weekend I hosted a 🧜🏻‍♀️ mermaid tea party 🫖 Last weekend I hosted a 🧜🏻‍♀️ mermaid tea party 🫖 to welcome in the warm weather we're finally having! And because I love tea parties. We had tiny sandwiches, savories, scones, and lots of mermaid themed desserts like sand dollar cookies and mermaid lagoon cups to go with the sea inspired decor. Of course, my friends totally showed up with the costumes! Everything from a reverse mermaid (@freshfrippery ) to an angler fish (@jybelly ) to aquatic themed characters from every story and culture. My mermaid princess look was thrown together at the last minute by adding some iridescent ruffles to a very wearable muslin I had made a while ago. I had other plans but I was too busy baking. 🙃 And I finally got to try a monofin (thanks @pixel_stitcher !) and really feel like a mermaid 🤩 I threw together a little puzzle hunt for my friends and many found the treasure! There was also plenty of swimming, sun, and friendship ❤️ Thank you for making summer special, my friends! ☀️ P.S. This weekend I did the LA Bakery Walk @labakerywal This weekend I did the LA Bakery Walk @labakerywalk , a half marathon distance where we visited bakeries along the way. The bakeries were: 1) @yori_bakeryla Yori @ Saero Coffee - Salt bread with maple cardamom bacon 2) @concertobakery Concerto - Milk cream salt bread 3) @maurys_losangeles Maury's - Sourdough bagel with wasabi + tobiko roe cream cheese 4) @thevalerieconfections Valerie - Chocolate chip cookies 5) @bakers.bench Bakers Bench - Black sesame cookies 6) @phoenixbakery Phoenix - Sugar butterfly and almond cookie (and I purchased their strawberry whipped cream cake) 7) @cafeknotted Knotted - Butter rice cake My fave? Maury's was hands down the best for me. That bagel was amazing. When I go back to LA, I'm definitely making a stop for a full size one. I'm dreaming of it now. Also, who knew LA was so hilly? In May I attended the @butlercafev regency romance In May I attended the @butlercafev regency romance dinner. It was the first time I've attended one of their events, but I'm sure it won't be the last! From the beautiful location at the Orchestria Palm Court with all of its player pianos to the place settings and delicious food, there was so much attention to detail. They even had a vendor station to get a keepsake of the evening and you could buy raffle tickets to raise money for charity. The butlers entertained us with interactive and engaging performances throughout the evening, making us feel like part of the story. I made several new friends and also loved checking out everyone's outfits. I wore a regency dress that I made as did @freshfrippery and @pixel_stitcher . Ready for a weekend in Napa with this dress I made Ready for a weekend in Napa with this dress I made using the patterns from @gertie18’s new book, Gertie Sews Glam Knits! I was super excited when I heard about this book. I love knits for their comfort factor, and knew that the Charm versions would be great! For this look, I made the surplice bodice paired with the pencil skirt. Fit-wise, I stuck with my usual Charm Patterns size and standard adjustments and was pleased to find everything was consistent. I’ll be honest—I’m not usually a pencil skirt gal—so I was surprised how much I like the way I look in this style. I recently got to pattern test the @patternemporiu I recently got to pattern test the @patternemporium_kate Making Moves Pants. I've been wanting to try some more trendy loose pants for work and these are perfect. The optional back seam detail along with top stitching/flat felling the seams makes it look a bit more tailored. They're slightly barrel legged with an elastic waist and pockets. This is the first of 2 pairs I made (probably gonna make more after I get through some items on my to sew list) and I used some lovely tencel twill from @needlesstudio which has great drape which is perfect for this pattern. Super easy, fast pattern. Especially good going into summer where loose flowy garments are great for keeping cool. #patternemporium #pemakingmovespants #secretpajamas #tenceltwill #barrellegpants
