I have a cousin and a college roommate who both have little girls that are the most adorable tiny humans you’ve ever met. Naturally they needed dresses. I went looking for an easy dress to get started with and found the Geranium Dress by Made By Rae. I like the simplicity, the different options. Figured…

A quilt top for mom

Quilting, SewingBy PigletJanuary 4, 20172 Comments

A while ago (and by a while I mean like 10 years ago), my mom made a quilt top. This quilt top languished in her fabric vault until about a year or two ago when I started doing longarm quilting. When I was home last time, I told her she just needed to get it…

As promised here’s a walkthrough for the wine bag tutorial that I wrote. It classes up that bottle of wine you’re grabbing on the way out the door as a gift for your party host. The bag can be made with 2 fat quarters or just extra fabric that you have laying around. And once…

Thanksgiving 5k Tutus

CraftsBy PigletDecember 14, 2016Leave a comment

I had to put this one under crafts because there’s actually no sewing involved! My family does a Turkey Trot 5k run every year on Thanksgiving Day. We’ve been doing it at least the last 5 years, maybe 10. I’ve lost count at this point. Some years I run. This year I walked with my…

do. Good Stitches

Quilting, SewingBy PigletNovember 20, 2016Leave a comment

I get a lot of joy out of quilting and sewing, but most of the sewing that I do would be classified as “selfish sewing.” It’s sewing that I do for me because I want to. I don’t feel too bad about this because I work hard at my job and sewing is one of…

Remember that 3/4 circle skirt I was working on fo Remember that 3/4 circle skirt I was working on for my @canadafashiondept class in the last post? Well, it's taken me a bit longer than expected to work out the details of the flounces.

I realized after drafting the flounce at the proposed 2" that it was not the level of drama I was hoping for. So I drafted 2 more at 3" and 4" with the same size center length. I cut them all out of fabric and you can see how different they look in the first photo, both horizontally and hanging vertically as they will be on the skirt.

Next I pinned them to the skirt to see which I liked best 2nd photo). Well, I liked them all. So the next step was to make flounces that went from 2"->3" and 3"->4". I drafted one and it was pretty time intensive. At this point I realized I could just do this with the power of math and tiled printing on my computer (yeah, you think I would have realized this sooner). So I did. The third photo is validating my computer drafted one with my hand drafted one.

Since I decided I liked the 4" flounce at the bottom, I have a couple of adjustments to make to my skirt pattern, but then I will finally have all the pieces drafted and can start sewing.

I did it as part of a class with @uncommonthreadsyarn. The yarn is @thefibrecompany Luma. It's really nice yarn, although I'm probably gonna do it in cotton next time so I don't need to wear an undershirt because wool. Great pattern and I love how it turned out! More pics on my blog.

Drafting a 3/4 wrap circle skirt from scratch for Drafting a 3/4 wrap circle skirt from scratch for my @canadafashiondept flat pattern class. This was a full body experience as getting a piece of paper big enough required crawling and taping on the floor. 😅 Yes there's still more to do and a flounce as well. At least the surplice bodice is done.

The projects I made during @siliconvalleymqg virtu The projects I made during @siliconvalleymqg virtual retreat! The oven mitts from yesterday's reels. A cute pin cushion. And of course worked on a number of quilts.

As mentioned in the reel descriptions, for the mitts I used the free @gertie18 pattern available on the Charm Patterns website. Bread fabric is from @spoonflower and the design is by @claudiecb.

The needle organizer pin cushion was provided to us, so I'm not sure where that came from exactly.

The blue and gold quilt is the fig leaf pattern by @tigheflanagan that I was wrapping up from his recent workshop with @siliconvalleymqg

Reward Day 31 of #castleintheairstudio #inktober Reward

Day 31 of #castleintheairstudio #inktober Thanks to @draw.with.michelle for the trophy tutorial.

Truly the reward has been how much I've learned from all the procreate tutorials I've done this month! I set out to use inktober as motivation for getting more comfortable with procreate and I've definitely succeeded.

I typically have a hard time sticking with month long challenges like this. Life gets in the way and I bail half way through. So I'm super proud of myself both for sticking with it (particularly for getting back on track when life did get in the way a few times) as well as for pushing myself to finally make progress on my drawing goals.

Thanks to @castleintheairstudio for the wonderfully inspiring list of prompts. And thank you to the many amazing artists who provide tutorials on YouTube and taught be so much. I've tagged them in the description of each drawing if they have an IG account.

Castle Day 24 of #castleintheairstudio #inktober Castle

Day 24 of #castleintheairstudio #inktober I’ve always loved the use of the term castle for the rook though apparently that makes me old-fashioned or informal or perhaps both. But if you can call the move castling then you should be able to call the piece a castle. No tutorial this time.
